It is recorded that the village of Holdenhurst was once called Holeest, meaning Holly Copse, from the old english 'holegn', 'holly' and 'hyrst' meaning 'copse'. In succeeding centuries it was spelt Holehurst (12th century), Holhurst (13th century), Hollehurst (14th) century, Holnehurst (15th century), Holnest (16th century) - Holly trees still abound in the lanes around the village. |
