The programme captured the imagination of a 12 year old schoolboy called Kim from Boscombe near Bournemouth. During the spring low tide, the sandy beaches at Boscombe seemed an ideal spot to try out this new sport.
Kim asked his father if he would cut him a 2 foot diameter disk from quarter inch thick plywood and chamfer it around one edge. The disk was to be sanded to a smooth finish and coated in several layers of varnish to make it water proof.
A week later the board was ready to try out and Kim and his parents took it to their beach hut where they met up with cousins Mark Littlefield, his sister Carey and a close friend Roger Paul.
